U.S. District Court Judge Eldon Fallon in New Orleans ruled for Whitehouse Station, N.J.-based Merck in a 2005 case brought by the Louisiana Attorney General's Office, one of more than a dozen such government lawsuits. Attorney James R. Dugan II of the Murray Law Firm in New Orleans, the...

An 18-wheeler carrying a forklift had turned into the alley and rolled over his legs.

Schulman screamed when he saw the white sneaker on his right foot turn red as it pooled with blood. He dragged himself toward a gas station. Someone called 911. An emergency-room doctor later compared the injured right foot to a crushed tomato: Squeeze hard enough, and the insides will burst. The truck's wheels also wrenched Schulman's left calfbone, causing a severe fracture. As he was lifted into an ambulance, Schulman mouthed the name he had seen emblazoned on the truck's cherry-red cab. He didn't want to forget it. Link ...

Philly insurer: Chicago owner offers better deal, for $228M

"We didn't have to merge," but the sale of PMA Capital Corp., Blue Bell, to Chicago-based Old Republic International Corp. will be better for shareholders "than if we stood alone," PMA boss Vincent Donnelly told me this morning. Half of PMA's 1,300 workers are based in Blue Bell and other Pennsylvania offices, and Donnelly expects most will keep their jobs, including him and his management team. With $4 billion in yearly sales, Old Republic is about 10 times PMA's size. Donnelly expects his company will stay in business as an independent unit of Old Republic. Spun off...

Summer Bike Safety Tips for Chicago Cyclists

Bicycling magazine once named it the best big city for bicycling in North America. The mayor is an avid cyclist. There is a citywide goal to become the "most bicycle-friendly" in the country by 2015. With 100 miles of bike lanes, 50 miles of off-street trails and 10,000 bike racks (the most in America), Chicago is definitely one bicycle-friendly city. City officials have compelling reasons to do more. As Mayor Richard M. Daley's ambitious Bike 2015 plan points out, Chicago motorists lose hours of potentially productive time in traffic, and spend an average of...
