$1.25 Million Dollar Settlement Reached in Pulmonary Embolism Wrongful Death of 72-Year Old

Paid By Undisclosed Chicago Area Hospital

On February 19, 2026, the family of a 72-year-old Chicago area woman reached a $1.25 million settlement with an undisclosed Chicago area hospital and family medicine physician on behalf of their wife and mother who died six days following her admission to the Hospital. The settlement was negotiated during a mediation with Judge Edward Harmening, ret. of ADR Systems.

In this lawsuit, the family alleged that their mother presented to the Hospital with mental status changes, that she had never previously experienced. The Plaintiff further alleged that upon her admission orders were entered to address the risk of a blood clot (Deep Vein Thrombosis), but were not followed. The Plaintiff then claimed that while their mother’s attending physician was attempting to understand the nature of her mental status changes, their mother was exhibiting signs and symptoms of a developing blood clot. The Plaintiff alleges that the doctor and the Hospital’s nursing staff failed to recognize these conditions, allowing the untreated blood clot to travel to her lungs causing fatal injuries.

The defense argued that they properly diagnosed the decedent, and that she did not suffer from a blood clot. Notwithstanding the absence of an autopsy that confirmed the cause of death, the Plaintiff was able to demonstrate that the decedent’s medical records provided sufficient evidence of the development of a blood clot, leading to the settlement.

The decedent left behind her husband and three grown children. The family was represented by Jeffrey Friedman and Arijana Keserovic of the Law Office of Jeffrey Friedman, P.C. in Chicago, Illinois.
