$1.4 Million Dollar Settlement Reached in Diabetic Ketoacidosis Wrongful Death of 67- Year Old
Paid By Undisclosed Chicago Area Hospital
On March 23, 2026, Cook County Circuit Court Judge Barrett approved a $1.4 million settlement for the family of a 67- year-old Chicago man who died following an emergency room visit at an Undisclosed Chicago Area Hospital. The settlement was negotiated during two mediations with Judge Edward Harmening, ret. of ADR Systems.
In this lawsuit, the family alleged that their father presented to the Hospital with complaints of new onset hernia and urinary retention. The family alleged that the Hospital’s emergency room physician and its Physician’s Assistant assessed the decedent, and as part of their assessment obtained laboratory studies including blood work. The family alleged that the blood test results indicated elevated blood sugar levels, that were unrelated to his complaints upon arrival at the emergency department. The family further claimed that the Hospital took no action concerning these abnormal blood levels.
Approximately one week following his discharge from the Hospital’s emergency department, the decedent, who lived alone, was found deceased in his apartment. The family claimed that his death was the result of his untreated hyperglycemia.
The defense denied that the decedent’s blood work during his emergency room visit was abnormal, and further claimed that they instructed him to promptly see his primary care physician after his discharge from the Hospital.
The decedent left behind two grown daughters.
The family was represented by Jeffrey Friedman and Arijana Keserovic of the Law Office of Jeffrey Friedman, P.C. in Chicago, Illinois.
