When Max Brown became a lawyer for a Chicago hospital 32 years ago, the biggest issue he had to deal with was the rising cost of medical malpractice.

Now, as Brown, 64, prepares to retire from Rush University Medical Center, medical malpractice remains a significant issue for the hospital. But in the new world of health care, the complexity of running an academic medical facility has increased exponentially.
