DETROIT — Republican senators want to eliminate Michigan’s no-fault insurance system while Detroit lawmakers oppose the move.
No-fault now provides auto accident victims who have suffered traumatic injuries with unlimited medical coverage.
The senate bill, introduced earlier this month, creates six tiers of Personal Injury Protection offering drivers a range of coverage depending on the policy they choose. At the basic level, insurers will provide a minimum payment of $50,000 for injuries sustained in an accident and limit the maximum payout to $500,000.
Sen. Morris Hood III, D-Detroit, opposes the bill.
