The vast majority of those who have put off retirement, have done so because of the recession. Despite the stock market gaining back much of what it...

Can Lawyers Be Trusted – On the Internet?

As an online marketer I have worked for many years developing, deploying and studying evolving ways for marketing professional services online. My specific focus has been both lawyers and their firms and financial services firms. While financial services firms are notoriously conservative in their initiatives, lawyers often approach comatose. There are many understandable reasons for this which I won’t explore here. But one of them is the fear and uncertainty perpetrated through each state’s bar association rules about exactly how they might go to market. Fear has a chilling effect on exploration and that includes lawyers’ effective use...

Victims of childhood sexual abuse have more time to sue

The statute of limitations, or deadline, for filing a lawsuit for childhood sex abuse in Illinois will increase to 20 years. Currently, the deadline is ten years, and in some cases five years. Under the new law, a victim has 20 years from the day they turn 18, or 20 years from the time when they discover that they were abused and it caused them injury, to file a lawsuit. The deadline in these cases is much longer than the typical personal injury deadline. The reason is that many victims of sexual abuse have repressed memories, and even if they...

Lawyer Lies, Part 2

Michael Helfand on 10.26.10 Every day this week I'm discussing a different lie told by attorneys in the Chicago area. Today's lie is: You can't fire me! While in the best scenario you'd never need to find a new attorney, I'm blown away by the number of lawyers who make their clients believe that they are stuck with them. It happens all of the time in workers' compensation and personal injury claims and often in criminal cases too. There is nothing that prevents you from getting a new attorney. In personal injury cases, if a lawsuit hasn't been filed, it's often as...

Brett Favre Sexual Harassment

Brett Favre Has Acted The Part Of The Hero Long Enough. It's Time To Yell 'Cut' And then of course, there’s the league itself. It seems likely that Favre is about to learn a humbling lesson about crashing to earth, courtesy of the same NFL that in the past never let his feet touch the ground. Yesterday, the league met with Jenn Sterger, former New York Jets sideline reporter and eye candy. The subject of the meeting was a seedy little peccadillo, involving text messages and pictures that will probably end up as a very sad blemish on the end of...

The Chicago nursing homes alone represent over forty percent of all the Cook County nursing homes.  Chicago nursing home abuse can include emotional, physical or sexual abuse. The perpetrator can be a staff member, another resident or a visitor to the home.  Illinois nursing homes and Chicago nursing homes are required to provide the highest care possible to residents; failure to do so can be devastating for the victim and her family. How to fire a lawyer in Chicago – Chicago’s Real Law Blog

A common myth that we hear from clients is that switching attorneys is hard or not allowed. The same is true if you are looking for a last minute replacement. Assuming you can find a new lawyer and you should try to have one in place before bouncing the old one,...

Philly insurer: Chicago owner offers better deal, for $228M

"We didn't have to merge," but the sale of PMA Capital Corp., Blue Bell, to Chicago-based Old Republic International Corp. will be better for shareholders "than if we stood alone," PMA boss Vincent Donnelly told me this morning. Half of PMA's 1,300 workers are based in Blue Bell and other Pennsylvania offices, and Donnelly expects most will keep their jobs, including him and his management team. With $4 billion in yearly sales, Old Republic is about 10 times PMA's size. Donnelly expects his company will stay in business as an independent unit of Old Republic. Spun off...

Summer Bike Safety Tips for Chicago Cyclists

Bicycling magazine once named it the best big city for bicycling in North America. The mayor is an avid cyclist. There is a citywide goal to become the "most bicycle-friendly" in the country by 2015. With 100 miles of bike lanes, 50 miles of off-street trails and 10,000 bike racks (the most in America), Chicago is definitely one bicycle-friendly city. City officials have compelling reasons to do more. As Mayor Richard M. Daley's ambitious Bike 2015 plan points out, Chicago motorists lose hours of potentially productive time in traffic, and spend an average of...
